Playing Politics with Swine Flu
By now you are probably starting to hear about the lovely disease known as swine flu. It is responsible for the deaths of dozens in Mexico so far and is popping up all over the United States and even Canada now. So far the Obama Administration is telling everyone not to panic. I may not be panicking, but I am very concerned about our ability to fully deal with this disease head on. This is because of those damn Republicans.
I can hear you now, "What does this have to do with politics?" Well, a lot actually. You see, Kathleen Sebelius was nominated by President Obama to be Secretary of Human and Health Services. This nomination was instantly detested by Republicans who can not tolerate the fact Sebelius is Pro-Choice. So they blocked her. Good ol' Sarah Palin has even gotten into the act.
In their ideological zeal Republicans are depriving the country of the Cabinet level position that is responsible for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services. This is bad enough in normal circumstances. With the potential of a flu pandemic it is unconscionable. The Obama Administration should come out swinging in a new and concentrated effort to get Sebelius confirmed. Point out that the Republicans are denying the United States of a key piece to effectively combat the spread of swine flu. This should rather quickly get them to back away from their futile quest to kill this nomination. The Repugs want to play hard ball, let's play.
