Yet Another Step in the Wrong Direction
US forces stormed buildings in Wasit province early on Sunday morning.
A policeman and a woman were shot dead and six people detained.
The US military said the raid, against a weapons smuggler and "network financier", had been "fully coordinated and approved by the Iraqi government".
They said soldiers had shot and killed "an individual with a weapon" outside the house and that the woman who died had "moved into the line of fire".
Besides the conflicting stories about a gunman being killed instead of a police officer and the death of an apparently innocent civilian woman this story gets much worse. The Iraqis are extremely upset about this raid. They claim the US has violated an agreement we had with Iraq:
The complicated Status of Forces Agreement was signed in November last year and came into force in early 2009.
It requires all military operations in Iraq to have the government's approval and allows for US soldiers to face trial if they commit crimes off base.
In a statement read on state TV, Mr Maliki (the Iraqi Prime Minister) said he condemned the killings as a "breach of the security pact".
He called on the US to "release the detainees and hand over those responsible for this crime to the courts".
It's just a guess but I do not think the US will hand over any of the soldiers to an Iraqi court. Call it a hunch. This is the first time Obama has been directly challenged by Maliki over US involvment in that country, and from their response I do not think efforts to make this go away will satisfy the Iraq government. Iraq has been religated to the back page for awhile now, but as this and other bad news continues to come out of that country I am less and less confident Obama is going to keep his timetable to withdraw combat troops. There are and will be far too many excuses for him not to do it. And that deeply concerns me.
UPDATE: You gotta be kidding me. That did not take long. I found this literally 20 minutes after posting this entry. The US is "negotiating possible exceptions to the June 30 deadline for withdrawing American combat troops from Iraqi cities...." I told ya.

This whole war was a step in the wrong direction. To make up for Bush's daddy's mistakes we have costs thousands their lives. It's absolutely insane.
