John Edwards Acknowledges Federal Investigation Into Campaign Funds

Well the hits keep on coming for John Edwards, former Democratic Presidential Nominee, who has admitted cheating on his wife Elizabeth.  He does deny any wrongdoing in this issue however.  From the AP:
Two-time Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards is acknowledging a federal inquiry into his campaign funds.

Edwards said in a statement obtained by The Associated Press on Sunday that he is confident no campaign funds were used improperly. He says he has made people and information available to resolve the issue in a timely manner.

The News & Observer of Raleigh was first to report that Edwards acknowledged the investigation.

A range of nonprofit and political groups that have been linked to Edwards have been under public scrutiny, including payments his political action committee made to a woman with whom he had an affair. Edwards acknowledged the affair in August.

Again, from an earlier post I really liked John Edwards.  A speech he gave early in the 2008 primaries really inspired me.  I immediately thought of RFK listening to him.  It is too bad all of this stuff keeps dribbling out.  For his sake, and for the little bit left of me that is not totally cynical, I hope this investigation reveals no illegal activity.  As bad as cheating on a spouse is, that ultimately is between them.  Using and gathering campaign funds illegally casts dispersions on the entire system.  Which brings up another subject for another post- the US should have publicly financed campaigns.  Take away all of the temptation huge private contributions to PACs, etc. create.
