The Political Point of the Day

This being Cinco de Mayo, today's selection comes from Cesar Chavez.  This quote is from a larger discussion about improving the lives of working men and women:
...So they are trying to do something about it. They are not doing it by seeking charity. They are not begging at the welfare office. They are not, like many of their employers, lobbying the halls of Congress with their gold plated tin cups asking to be paid for not growing crops. They are trying to do it in the way that millions of other Americans have shown is the right way-organization, unionism, collective bargaining.
The picture above is Bobby Kennedy with Cesar Chavez, who had been on hunger strike for 25 days.  Growing up Cesar Chavez  saw first hand how a class of people who were supposedly powerless could band together and equalize the playing field.  His lesson to us is that we do not have to accept the cards dealt to us.  Organizing ourselves is the best non-violent tactic the people have against destructive practices, either by corporations or government.  With everything seemingly crashing down on the middle and lower classes, we would do well to learn what Cesar Chavez has tried to teach us.  Solidarity.
