The Political Point of the Day

Today's selection comes from Winston Churchill:

The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter.

I always enjoyed this one-liner from Churchill.  Unfortunately, often times it seems as though Churchill was correct.  There are countless news stories about how students can not find their state on a map or for that matter even read up to their grade level.  All those stories paint a pretty bleak picture.  The good news is the remedy is right there in front of us.  We just have to implement it.

Instead of spending insane amounts on new fighter jets we do not need, let's improve education on all levels.  We also have to make college affordable for all.  Public financial support for lowering the cost of continuing people's education has obvious and immediate benefits.  With a more aware and educated populace greater involvement in our democracy will surely follow.  Also, it's to everyones benefit not to have young people drowning in debt before they are 25.  So remember, there is nothing permanent about Churchill's perception about the average voter, we can change it.
