Rachel Alexandra Holds On For Thrilling Preakness Victory

The first filly to win the Preakness in 85 years just shut the boys up. Rachel Alexandra took the lead from the outside post early and never looked backed. Mine That Bird, the Kentucky Derby winner, closed like a freight train again but came up one length short.
Calvin Borel, who won on Mine That Bird in the Derby, switched to Rachel Alexandra for the Preakness. He was questioned early in the week for this move, he was voluntarily giving up the saddle of a horse that had the biggest margin of victory at the Kentucky Derby since 1946 after all. But Borel has consistently said Rachel Alexandra is the best horse he has ever been on. And he showed today why he has this feeling.
It really was a great race, an exciting race. I personally wanted Mine That Bird to win so he could have went to the Belmont with a chance to win The Triple Crown. Rachel Alexandra's owners have not committed to her running in the Belmont in three weeks, but I suspect she will be there. As it stands now we will have to wait another year for a Triple Crown winner. Affirmed was the last horse to accomplish this feat in 1978.

The elite of thoroughbred racing was not thrilled by Mine That Bird's win in the Kentucky Derby. The "cowboys" brought a great horse was about the biggest compliment they would give. Mine that Bird's run up through the field at the Preakness ran into a lot of blocks and he still almost pulled out the victory. Several horses went to the rail during the race and where not about to come off of it.

This was a great story about a great horse. I'm said this year's field isn't even close to as intriguing as last year's. A triple crown winner could really help open the sport to many new eyes.
