The Political Point of the Day

Today's selection comes from the Marquis de Lafayettte:
True republicanism is the sovereignty of the people. There are natural and imprescriptible rights which an entire nation has no right to violate.
Lafayette was truly a remarkable man.  He was born a French aristocrat in 1757.  This was his full name to show you just how blue his blood was- Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de la Fayette.  When he learned of the American Revolution he mustered his soldiers and sailed for America in 1777.  He became very close to George Washington and was at nearly all of the major engagements that took place after his arrival.

For an aristocrat born in France that still held to the idea of "the divine right of kings" Lafayette risked his life (he was wounded at Brandywine) so that liberty and freedom could come to America.  The sovereignty of the people that he speaks of is truly a sacred thing.  We must be ever vigilant against those who would errode it.
