I'm a Union Man

Solidarity:

Workers at one of the oldest big-city newspapers in the US, the Boston Globe, have rejected the latest cost-cutting package proposed by their managers.

The Boston Newspaper Guild union voted down $10m (£6.2m) of pay and benefit cuts proposed by its parent company, the New York Times.

The Times says it will now have to impose a 23% pay cut on union members to keep the paper in circulation.

Both sides say they will keep talking to resolve the long-running dispute.

[...]

The guild voted by 277 to 265 to reject the proposals, effectively killing the deal.

After the vote, guild president Daniel Totten said in a statement that the paper's owners "must do better than the offer that was presented".

He said the Globe was "vital to the life and culture of the region" and depended on the "fair treatment" of those who produced it.

The Boston Globe is the latest title to find itself squeezed by falling sales, rising costs and declining advertising revenues.

Traditional papers also face stiff competition from websites offering news content for free and other sites luring away classified advertisers.

At least 12,500 jobs have gone in US print journalism in the past two years.

It's about damn time organized labor stood up and pushed back against management's demands.  These workers were responsible for management being able to have their fancy houses and cars, now when times are tough it is always the workers who get the shaft.  Solidarity.

In Feb. '09 management at the Boston Globe received bonus's just weeks before there initial threat to close the paper. Guild members have received no raises in 4 years. Managements best offer was to cut Guild members pay 10.3% with no reinstatement time table given. Management must endure a 5% cut until Dec.31. Guild members have had significant pension and retirement cuts, including ending any 401k match. The Times Company has actually boosted matching contributions for management 401k plans to 66%. Shareing the pain and being a true partner with workers does not seem to be The Times Company's way. It is hard to see how they could of expected any other result.

It is a sad sign of the times, but newspapers are going the way of the typewriter.I used to read the New York Times front to back every day.I had a job that allowed me the time to do that.Today's rat race,24/7 network 'news' and blogs provide an easier source of information. Of course, the 'news worthless as it funnels corporate propaganda and opinion panels that are mud wrestling in suits instead of unbiased information. The Tampa Tribune stopped home delivery of weekday papers recently. It will only get worse to the detriment of society.A democracy requires an educated and informed public to function. Sadly, today we have neither.
