Petition the US Soccer Team to Wear Green

The US soccer team has shocked the world by beating #1 ranked Spain and is now going to play Brazil on Sunday in the Confederations Cup final.  Millions of people around the world will be watching this game.

As you may recall, several members of the Iranian soccer team wore green wristbands in solidarity with their countrymen and women standing up for freedom and liberty.  Those players have since been kicked off the Iranian team.

Huffington Post has up a petition for the US players to wear these green wristbands.  I think it is a great way for the world to see the brave Iranians standing up to blatant oppression are not being forgotten.

-Please copy this:
To the U.S. soccer team players:

Please consider wearing green wristbands in your upcoming match in the Confederations Cup finale. It would be a sign of solidarity and compassion for your fellow soccer brethren who were banned from the game they love and face unthinkable repercussions for simply adorning a green wristband symbolizing peace and freedom. This is not politics, it is human rights. Any slap on the wrist you may face from FIFA pales in comparison to what the Iranian soccer team faced, and what the Iranian people face.

Make us proud. Make the world proud.

-And paste it the message box at the official US Soccer page that pops right up here:

Thank You

Please read my prior comments on this tragedy. .....While noble,I don't know what good can come of such a display. Twenty years ago,I watched in horror as a similar movement was crushed in Tienanmen Square. I said at that time'This cannot stand. These people should be overthrown' I was disgusted and sick to my stomach. Today? Every object in your home was made in China. Check it out. Was my outrage transformed into punishing the leadership of China? Hardly. And now,China gets a majority of it's oil from whom? Iran. So any sabre rattling is stupid concerning Iran. The good fascists in China and Iran operate with a wink and a nod and who is gonna stop em. Hmmm? So do all good deeds and be all solidarity and all that stuff. The Mullahs don't give a shit and neither do the Chinese. Just sayin. I'll save my emotion for something I can actually affect.

      Hey FloridaDave,

Of course the regime does not give a shit about such symbolic gestures, they certainly won't throw up their hands and walk away b/c of this. However, the Iranian people need to know the world empathizes and supports them. They are fighting a quasi-revolution with stones, bricks and the occasional Molotov Cocktail against armed paramilitaries.

It is human nature for people to need support when undertaking enormous challenges, and this game will be watched world-wide. What better way to try and keep the Iranian people's spirits high. It is still less than 2 weeks into this mess and they need to keep the pressure up, they can not be forced to just melt away as a result of the crackdown. I'm starting to ramble, but if this small token encourages Iranians to hold fast in any way, it will not be a futile gesture.

While I agree in spirit,I'll stand by my remarks. Let me put it this way-The protests and deaths have not budged the Mullahs and have exposed them -selves for the thugs they are. If I were to encourage the Iranians to continue to fight and a REAL bloodbath occured,I'd be hard pressed to not feel responcible for their deaths.Martyrdom accomplishes one thing-more dead people.

If allowed to do this it would be a show of support for the Iranian players and people in the middle of this mess. Anything to show support is good and purposeful.

I had just discovered it. Moments earlier, I'd settled into my seat and plugged the Beats' seductive red cable into my iPod Nano's mini-jack. I'd selected an album and pressed Play. Nothing.

Included in the Beats' impressive packaging are two Duracell AAA batteries. I hadn't installed them. I removed the headphones and searched all over for a battery compartment. Again: Nothing. I was perplexed. And charley-horsed.
